About Rail City

Miami's Florida Bombers were scheduled to compete in their first AAABA tournament in 2011, but claimed to have bus problems and never arrived in town. Tournament officials were not notified of the problems until the morning of registration and were forced to quickly recruit a 16th team to avoid playing with an uneven bracket. With the first game only a day away, the decision was made to bring one of the defeated local teams in to the tournament. Altoona's Joe Faretta spent the morning calling the players on his Logan Beverage team, who hurriedly treked south to Johnstown. After a wild scambled to assemble all the required paperwork for registration, the young but spirited Altoona club was successfully entered as the 16th team.

Despite being comprised of high-school players, the Altoona secondary entry stunned Livonia with a 5-1 win at Point Stadium to open the tournament. However, the dominant Baltimore club was too much for Logan Beverage and won easily 10-0 in 7 innings. Johnstown's secondary entry--Delweld--then eliminated the Rail City squad in a tight 5-3 game on Wednesday afternoon.

The nickname 'Rail City' was used by this website to differentiate the team from the official Altoona entry. It is unlikely that this 'franchise' will ever compete again, but they deserve credit for their hasty answer to the call and competitive showing in the tournament.
