About Birmingham

Birmingham joined the AAABA in the 1957 as the first (and still only) team from Alabama. After back-to-back 9th place finishes in their first two years, V. Nash Carmichael's clubs put together a string of three strong seasons. A fourth place finish in 1959 was followed by a third in 1960. The Lions' Club team then lost in the 1961 finals to fellow southerners from New Orleans. Carmichael guided his teams back to the finals in 1973 (Woodhaven Lakes) and 1975 (Buckner Chevrolet) but finished in 2nd both times. Birmingham's last year in competition was in 1977.

In 1963 at the Altoona Regional, Birmingham started undefeated with wins over Pittsburgh and Northern Virginia. On Sunday, they dropped a 13-inning bout to Pittsburgh but rallied for a 5-1 victory in the second game to win the regional.
