About Beckley

From the 'It was fun while it lasted' archives comes the short tale of the Beckley, West Virginia franchise. Steve Giles and Steve Newberry brought the Beckley Bash Athletic Club onto the AAABA scene in 2003 and quickly made a name for themselves.  They advanced out of the Altoona regional with two wins over Brooklyn, and the stunned the tournament with a 3-2 victory over Baltimore in their inaugural game. Beckley followed up that feat with a 4-1 win over New Orleans that had the whole town talking. The fairytale ended as soon as it began, however, with loses to Washington (13-3) and Maryland State (8-3) and a 7th place finish.

In 2004, the Bash swept through the Zanesville regional and once again beat New Orleans in the national tournament. After a set-back to Baltimore, the Bash got revenge against Maryland State 5-3 in 10 innings and then outlasted Schenectady 4-3 in 13 innings. However, the long games took their toll and it was New Orleans' turn for revenge. The Boosters eliminated Beckley 5-4 on Thursday.

Financial problems in 2005 brought about the end of the Bash organization, and with it, the Beckley franchise.
