Wednesday Pregame

Altoona & Philadelphia rematch in upper bracket final; Johnstown takes on Boston; 4 more teams to be eliminated

By the end of today, the tournament will be down to only eight teams! We will again be posting live scoring updates on our game day page based on tweets, texts, and emails we receive through out the day.

Philadelphia vs Altoona

Game of the Day

I'm sure many folks were expecting this game to be New Brunswick against New Orleans, but the two Pennsylvania teams made big statements with their wins on Tuesday. That's why we're picking this as our game of the day. Both teams did well last year (Philadelphia 4-2, Altoona 3-2) and met twice, with Philadelphia winning both times. The Bandits beat Wise 5-3 on Wednesday at Roxbury and eliminated the Rail City crew 12-2 in 7 innings at the Point on Friday.

Altoona is hoping to start 3-0 for the fourth time ('94, '99, '08) and Philadelphia for a sixth time ('86, '07, '08, '10, and '14). The winner of this game plays the winner of Johnstown and Boston.

Philadelphia leads the series 6-2 over Altoona and has won the last four. Altoona eliminated Philadelphia in 1974 and 2000. Philadelphia picked up wins in 1982, 1996, 2001, 2007, 2008, and 2010. In 1982, Philadelphia won 24-8 at Cochran High School. Altoona has managed to scored only 1 run in each of the last 3 games. Five of their 8 meetings have been in the winners bracket, and this is the second time they will meet with 2-0 records. Philadelphia won the last such match-up 10-1 in 2007 at Lilly.

Philadelphia played at the Iron Horse Sports Complex on Monday and picked up the first ever AAABA win at the field. Altoona has not yet played on the new turf field, so the Bandits might have a slight advantage in that regard.

Livonia vs Columbus

Both teams have had a day of big offense and a day of little offense. Winner faces either Baltimore or New Orleans. Loser is eliminated.

Livonia has won 4 of the 5 contests between these two franchises. Columbus' only win came in 1986 when Upper Arlington beat Adray's 12-9 at Vo-Tech. Livonia won the 1984 meeting at Vo-Tech 3-2, and have the last 3 games in 2007, 2010, and 2012. The current Columbus team--managed by Tony Perz--played in the 2012 game.

Livonia is back at Fichtner for the first time since 2012 when they were mercy-ruled by Cleveland. Columbus last played there in 2012 and beat Philadelphia 5-4. This is the second time at the field for both franchises.

New Brunswick vs Chicago-Metropolitan

One of these two pre-tournament favorites will be heading home today. They are the two most recent champions not named Youse's Orioles and will meet at Roxbury Park. This is the first meeting between these two franchises. Both clubs have fielded very competitive teams in recent tournaments and have tournament experience, so this should be a well-fought contest.

 Youngstown vs Buffalo

Buffalo fell to Johnstown last night at Point Stadium, but will be back at Point Stadium this afternoon to take on Youngstown. The Buffalo franchise is 4-0 against Youngstown including 3 wins at Point Stadium. Two of those wins came in 1976 when national runner-up Al Marone Ford gave Youngstown's Malone Day both of their tournament loses. Buffalo also won in 1986 and 2006. This is only the second time they have met in an elimination game.

Boston vs Johnstown

The new Boston franchise will get to play the night game against Johnstown. This is the first meeting between the two franchises, of course. Johnstown is looking to start the tournament 3-0 for the tenth time and first since Delweld in 2013. All time, Johnstown is 26-27 in their third tournament game.

This one was a runner-up for game of the day. It will be exciting to see a new team at the Point Stadium, and the Boston Astros have shown a lot of enthusiasm and energy in their previous games this week. While the first two night games have been on the quiet side, this one should be lively and energetic.

 New Orleans vs Baltimore

It's the most anticipated rivalry in the AAABA but has a different flavor this year. The Presstman Cardinals performed well against Cleveland on Tuesday, showing determination when trailing and ultimately overtaking the Cleveland Blaze. While the roster is not the same caliber as previous Baltimore entries, the team has shown good baseball sense on the diamond and are playing with focus and determination.

New Orleans will be a dangerous foe now that they have one loss. The Boosters never go down quietly and the Cardinals will have their hands full. Baltimore is 32-19 all time against New Orleans and have won the last 12 contests. New Orleans last won in 2002. The Boosters are the favorites going into this match up, but the Cardinals can make a big impression if they are able to eliminate New Orleans.
