Tuesday Pregame

Notes on today's games; 4 teams to be eliminated

It's Tuesday of AAABA week and that means four teams will be playing their final games of the tournament. We will again be posting live scoring updates on our game day page based on tweets, texts, and emails we receive through out the day.

Please note that the New Brunswick / Altoona game and the Boston / Livonia game have been postponed until 2pm.

Philadelphia vs New Orleans

Winners Bracket Game of the Day

This is our pick for the winners bracket game today. Philadelphia was runner up last year and just got revenge against Chicago-Metro with a 7-1 win on Monday. The Bandits are fighting to get back to the championship again this year. New Orleans is back with a new manager and new-found determination. They held Flood City at bay yesterday at the Point as they try to recapture their championship spirit from years gone by. The game is at Lilly, which is one of the nicest fields used by the AAABA.

New Orleans is 17-3 against Philadelphia dating back to 1947. This is the first time they will meet at Lilly. Philadelphia picked up their wins in 1956, 1962, and 2008. The most recent bout was decided in 10 innings, with Philadelphia taking a 2-0 win at Roxbury Park.

Brooklyn vs Columbus

Losers Bracket Game of the Day

This is our pick for the losers bracket game today. Both teams have histories in the tournament and have had strong showings in the past. More importantly, neither team lived up to their potential on Monday. Brooklyn lost 8-2 to Buffalo and Columbus lost 8-1 to Johnstown. Sloppy fielding was a problem for both teams. Their veteran managers Jerry Katzke and Tony Perz know what is necessary to refocus the team for today. We're expecting a very competitive game between these two clubs as they fight to stave off elimination.

Brooklyn was winless last year when represented by Youth Service. The franchise has never had back-to-back winless tournaments. Columbus was last winless in 2007 when the Big Katz were in town. The Brooklyn / Columbus series is tied at 2 each. Columbus won 13-7 in 1978. Brooklyn won 2-1 in 1994 during their championship year. Columbus took their 1997 contest by a score of 13-12 at Roxbury Park. In 2002, Brooklyn evened the series with a 12-2 thrashing in Portage.

The game is at the new Iron Horse facility in Windber. Admission is expected to be $3.

New Brunswick vs Altoona

This game has been delayed until 2pm. We've had a lot of rain this morning and they need a little extra time to let the Fichtner field dry off.

Altoona is 4-2 against New Brunswick all time. The Matrix have faced Altoona twice in the past 4 years, losing a wild 13-inning marathon in 2010 at Fichtner Field 8-6, but winning the most-recent match at Fichtner in 2013 by a score of 6-4. This will be their 3rd consecutive game played at the Middle School.

The other meetings were in 1975 (Altoona 10-5), 1987 (Altoona 6-5), 1988 (New Brunswick 14-8), and 1989 (Altoona 12-2 in 8). New Brunswick has won both winners bracket games, and Altoona has won all four loser bracket games.

  Johnstown vs Buffalo

The long-standing Royal Printing organization will get their chance to play under the lights against Johnstown tonight. Both teams scored 8 runs in bits and pieces on Monday in what were generally comfortable wins. The crowd tonight will likely be a bit smaller than opening night, but we can still expect several thousand on hand as Johnstown looks to stay in the winner's bracket. Johnstown has lost their Tuesday game 3 of the last 4 years.

The overall series is tied a 5 wins a piece, and Johnstown has taken the last four. The streak started with a crazy 17-15 victory during Johnstown's runner-up year in 1995. The teams first met in 1953 when Buffalo's Frank Kicks Athletic Goods beat Johnstown's Westmont AC 13-4. The most recent was Johnstown Delweld's 6-5 win over Buffalo Meridian Titans in 2013.

Here are all the games. 1953 (Buf 13-4), 1964 (Buf 6-2), 1970 (Jtn 5-4), 1975 (Buf 6-2), 1984 (Buf 10-7), 1995 (Buf 10-2), 1995 (Jtn 17-15), 1999 (Jtn 8-7), 2010 (Jtn 6-1), 2013 (Jtn 6-5).

Boston vs Livonia

This game has been delayed until 2pm. Roxbury Park has been having drainage issues and we had a lot of rain this morning. They are set to rebuild the field, but not until next year.

Boston got past Chicago-South Shore on Monday, but will face a tougher opponent in the Livonia Hurricanes today. The Hurricanes were cruising in their opener against Youngstown, but allowed 4 runs in the 9th and nearly lost their lead. This will be the first meeting between Boston and Livonia.

 Cleveland vs Baltimore

Both teams are new to the AAABA tournament, and one is going to have a very short time in Johnstown. Baltimore has not left the tournament winless since 1998's Corrigan Insurance team. Cleveland was last winless in 2010 with the Old Brooklyn Hurricanes.

Baltimore won the first 5 meetings between these franchises ('85, '87, '95, '06, '11). Two of those were by mercy-rule. The Chardon Blizzard upset Youse's Orioles in 2012 5-2 at the Point Stadium for Cleveland's only win over Baltimore to date.

Keep in mind, of course, that neither of these teams have represented their franchise before, so all bets are off on this one.

Chicago-Metropolitan vs Flood City

Two good upper bracket teams in this one, but only one can continue. Defending champion Chicago-Metro don't want to leave the tournament empty-handed, especially after going undefeated last year. The last defending champ to leave the following tournament winless was the 1994 Baltimore Corrigan Insurance team. Laurel Auto--Johnstown's runner-up team--just faced New Orleans and now gets another strong opponent.

Chicago-Metro last left the tournament winless in 2011 and 2012. Johnstown's Flood City entry has always managed a win in their short 7-year history. Chicago has never played Johnstown's runner-up team, but are 2-4 against Johnstown teams since 1990, including their win last year in the semi-finals.

Youngstown vs Chicago-South Shore

Coach Mario Ollarvio felt that his Chicago-South Shore team let their game slip away yesterday against Boston. The Satchel Paige lost by only one run as they attempted to end their 18-game losing streak. With that streak up to 19 now, they will face Bob Mingo's Creekside Crocodiles team from Youngstown, who also suffered a frustrating loss yesterday. After falling behind to Livonia 7-0, they rallied back with 4 in the bottom of the ninth to pull within 7-6 but could not complete the comeback. Watch for Youngstown to come out swinging today so as to avoid falling into another big hole.

Youngstown beat Chicago 11-1 at Saint Michael in 2012, which is their only previous meeting.
