New Brunswick advances to Johnstown

Matrix rout Tribe in eastern regional

By Brian Varmecky and Tom Strauss

After a controversial ending to their 2014 tournament, the New Brunswick Matrix are eager to get back to Johnstown for this year's national tournament. Their earnestness was evident early and often at the North Brunswick Community Park as the Matrix pounded out 26 runs on 24 hits to sweep past New York's Northeast Tribe 2-games-to-none in the AAABA eastern regional. The series win qualified New Brunswick for the national tournament beginning on August 10th.

In the opening game, New Brunswick erupted for nine runs in the second inning, highlighted by Alex Christian's (pictured in 2014) 3-run home run. The Tribe committed two, 2-run errors in the inning, as well. Spencer Young singled in two more runs in the bottom of the fourth, which was only half of the total the Matrix would score that inning. Three more runs in the sixth set the final at 16-0 as the Matrix ended the game early on the mercy rule. Mike Bernet was the winning pitcher, with James McCleary picking up the loss for New York.

The second game of the double-header looked much the same as the first. In the second inning, 16-year-old Harry Rutkowski launched a 3-run home-run to open the scoring. Veteran Andrew Neich added a solo home run in the fourth. A John Mastroangelo double and Alex Christian single added 3 more runs in the fifth. Christian plated another run in the sixth, and the Tribe committed their third two-run error of the afternoon. New Brunswick closed the game out in 7 innings, this time winning by a score of 10-0. The winning pitcher was Joe Serrapica while Sean Turtorro was the losing pitcher for New York.

This is the third regional victory for the Matrix since 2009 and advances them to their 7th consecutive national tournament. They are 16-11 and won the 2012 national championship.
